4 Conclusions

The smart city idea is evolving towards an umbrella concept that implies the key role of ICT in enabling the city system’s sustainability and resilience whilst pursuing citizens’ quality of life.

Many cities are experimenting many different and idiosyncratic strategies to achieve these intertwining goals. This study provides the reader with a systematic map of these sometimes converging, sometimes diverging strategies. The results confirm that ICTs can actually serve as the unifying element that permits the integration and cross-fertilisation of many different initiatives in many different areas of urban life.

Currently, the main factor of possible smart city failure seems the poor integration between and across smart initiatives; therefore, ICTs and information systems management are in the position to play a crucial role for smart city success in the next future.

Possible future research steps include the dynamic monitoring of the impacts of smart initiatives, especially the intangible impacts relating to quality of life and the organisational challenges stemming from the need to leverage ICT to pursue the integration of smart project portfolios in different, specific contexts.
